This book contains the proceedings as well as invited papers for
the first annual conference of the UNESCO Unitwin Complex System
Digital Campus (CSDC), which is an international initiative
gathering 120 Universities on four continents, and structured in
ten E-Departments. First Complex Systems Digital Campus World
E-Conference 2015 features chapters from the latest research
results on theoretical questions of complex systems and their
experimental domains. The content contained bridges the gap between
the individual and the collective within complex systems science
and new integrative sciences on topics such as: genes to organisms
to ecosystems, atoms to materials to products, and digital media to
the Internet. The conference breaks new ground through a dedicated
video-conferencing system - a concept at the heart of the
international UNESCO UniTwin, embracing scientists from low-income
and distant countries. This book promotes an integrated system of
research, education, and training. It also aims at contributing to
global development by taking into account its social, economic, and
cultural dimensions. First Complex Systems Digital Campus World
E-Conference 2015 will appeal to students and researchers working
in the fields of complex systems, statistical physics,
computational intelligence, and biological physics.

Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are metaheuristics that learn from
natural collective behavior and are applied to solve optimization
problems in domains such as scheduling, engineering,
bioinformatics, and finance. Such applications demand acceptable
solutions with high-speed execution using finite computational
resources. Therefore, there have been many attempts to develop
platforms for running parallel EAs using multicore machines,
massively parallel cluster machines, or grid computing
environments. Recent advances in general-purpose computing on
graphics processing units (GPGPU) have opened up this possibility
for parallel EAs, and this is the first book dedicated to this
exciting development. The three chapters of Part I are tutorials,
representing a comprehensive introduction to the approach,
explaining the characteristics of the hardware used, and presenting
a representative project to develop a platform for automatic
parallelization of evolutionary computing (EC) on GPGPUs. The 10
chapters in Part II focus on how to consider key EC approaches in
the light of this advanced computational technique, in particular
addressing generic local search, tabu search, genetic algorithms,
differential evolution, swarm optimization, ant colony
optimization, systolic genetic search, genetic programming, and
multiobjective optimization. The 6 chapters in Part III present
successful results from real-world problems in data mining,
bioinformatics, drug discovery, crystallography, artificial
chemistries, and sudoku. Although the parallelism of EAs is suited
to the single-instruction multiple-data (SIMD)-based GPU, there are
many issues to be resolved in design and implementation, and a key
feature of the contributions is the practical engineering advice
offered. This book will be of value to researchers, practitioners,
and graduate students in the areas of evolutionary computation and
scientific computing.
The study of dynamical systems is a well established field. This
book provides a panorama of several aspects of interest to
mathematicians and physicists. It collects the material of several
courses at the graduate level given by the authors, avoiding
detailed proofs in exchange for numerous illustrations and
examples. Apart from common subjects in this field, a lot of
attention is given to questions of physical measurement and
stochastic properties of chaotic dynamical systems.
Main concepts of quasi-stationary distributions (QSDs) for killed
processes are the focus of the present volume. For diffusions, the
killing is at the boundary and for dynamical systems there is a
trap. The authors present the QSDs as the ones that allow
describing the long-term behavior conditioned to not being killed.
Studies in this research area started with Kolmogorov and Yaglom
and in the last few decades have received a great deal of
attention. The authors provide the exponential distribution
property of the killing time for QSDs, present the more general
result on their existence and study the process of trajectories
that survive forever. For birth-and-death chains and diffusions,
the existence of a single or a continuum of QSDs is described. They
study the convergence to the extremal QSD and give the
classification of the survival process. In this monograph, the
authors discuss Gibbs QSDs for symbolic systems and absolutely
continuous QSDs for repellers. The findings described are relevant
to researchers in the fields of Markov chains, diffusions,
potential theory, dynamical systems, and in areas where extinction
is a central concept. The theory is illustrated with numerous
examples. The volume uniquely presents the distribution behavior of
individuals who survive in a decaying population for a very long
time. It also provides the background for applications in
mathematical ecology, statistical physics, computer sciences, and
economics.
Animated French film written and directed by Walerian Borowczyk.
The story follows the lives of Mr Kabal (voice of Pierre Collet)
and his mechanical monster wife (Louisette Rousseau) who get on
each other's nerves but can't imagine being apart. When Mrs Kabal
suffers from indigestion after eating a butterfly her husband has
to travel inside her to find the source of the problem. The film
was Borowczyk's first full-length feature.

This book constitutes selected best papers from the 10th
International Conference on Artificial Evolution, EA 2011, held in
Angers, France, in October 2011. Initially, 33 full papers and 10
post papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 64
submissions. This book presents the 19 best papers selected from
these contributions. The papers are organized in topical sections
on ant colony optimization; multi-objective optimization; analysis;
implementation and robotics; combinatorial optimization; learning
and parameter tuning; new nature inspired models; probabilistic
algorithms; theory and evolutionary search; and applications.

The basic aim of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "New Trends
in Nonlinear Dynamics and Pattern-Forming Phenomena: The Geometry
of Nonequilibrium" was to bring together researchers from various
areas of physics to review and explore new ideas regarding the
organisation of systems driven far from equilibrium. Such systems
are characterized by a close relationship between broken spatial
and tempo ral symmetries. The main topics of interest included
pattern formation in chemical systems, materials and convection,
traveling waves in binary fluids and liquid crystals, defects and
their role in the disorganisa tion of structures, spatio-temporal
intermittency, instabilities and large-scale vortices in open
flows, the mathematics of non-equilibrium systems, turbulence, and
last but not least growth phenomena. Written contributions from
participants have been grouped into chapters addressing these
different areas. For additional clarity, the first chapter on
pattern formation has been subdivided into sections. One of the
main concerns was to focus on the unifying features between these
diverse topics. The various scientific communities repre sented
were encouraged to discuss and compare their approach so as to
mutually benefit their respective fields. We hope that, to a large
degree, these goals have been met and we thank all the participants
for their efforts. The workshop was held in Cargese (Corsica,
France) at the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques from August 2nd to
August 12th, 1988. We greatly thank Yves Pomeau and Daniel Walgraef
who, as members of the organising committee, gave us valuable
advice and encouragements.

Iterations of continuous maps of an interval to itself serve as
the simplest examples of models for dynamical systems. These models
present an interesting mathematical structure going far beyond the
simple equilibrium solutions one might expect. If, in addition, the
dynamical system depends on an experimentally controllable
parameter, there is a corresponding mathematical structure
revealing a great deal about interrelations between the behavior
for different parameter values.
This work explains some of the early results of this theory to
mathematicians and theoretical physicists, with the additional hope
of stimulating experimentalists to look for more of these general
phenomena of beautiful regularity, which oftentimes seem to appear
near the much less understood chaotic systems. Although continuous
maps of an interval to itself seem to have been first introduced to
model biological systems, they can be found as models in most
natural sciences as well as economics.
"Iterated Maps on the Interval as Dynamical Systems" is a
classic reference used widely by researchers and graduate students
in mathematics and physics, opening up some new perspectives on the
study of dynamical systems .
Due to the very old age and scarcity of this book, many of the
pages may be hard to read due to the blurring of the original text,
possible missing pages, missing text and other issues beyond our
